Patagonia Partners with Natural Fiber Welding

A Northern California outdoor industry executive, Nathan Duncan focuses on retail strategy with Patagonia, Inc. Nathan Duncan is part of a team with a lasting commitment to principles of sustainability and improving the environment through durable high performance clothing and equipment.

One partnership announced in September 2021 brings Patagonia together with Peoria, Illinois based Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) in the development of circular textile production methods. Established in 2015, NFW creates innovative performance materials such as Mirum, a plant-based leather-like material created from natural polymers. Mirum makes use of the strength inherent in materials such as rice hulls, coconut husk, and cork, and avoids the use of plastic coatings and binders.

Another innovation is the patented technology platform Clarus, which employs engineered natural yarn structures that can compete with synthetics on every level. As composites made of natural materials, Clarus fibers are fully recyclable and can be recirculated within a closed system of fabric production. With NFW’s raw materials locally sourced, Patagonia is a step further along in its mission of providing gear that is fully sustainable.
